Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal

Impacted wisdom teeth are rear molars which erupt at an unnatural angle and push against adjacent teeth and can cause pain, irritation and infections in the gum and cheeks.

Whether fully, partially or horizontal impacted, wisdom teeth which cause pain or swelling should be removed to prevent further dental and oral health complications, including:

  • Gum infection which can lead to periodontal diseases, including gingivitis, periodontitis and necrotising periodontal disease.
  • Jaw cysts which can displace the tooth, destroy bone and damage gums and other teeth.
  • Food traps which can damage other teeth and cause tooth decay and cavities.
  • Resorption cavities which may require the extraction of other teeth to prevent nerve damage.
Impacted wisdom teeth are more common on the upper jaw, but it isn’t uncommon for wisdom teeth on the lower jaw to fully, partially or horizontally impact and require wisdom teeth removal.

Impacted wisdom tooth extractions

If your dentist has recommended that you have an impacted wisdom tooth removed, the procedure will need to be performed by an oral surgeon. Dr Andrew MacMillan is an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon consulting and operating in Toowoomba, and can assist with all referrals for:

  • Fully impacted wisdom teeth removal — The wisdom tooth has fully impacted and is stuck in the jaw.
  • Partially impacted wisdom tooth removal — The tooth is partially impacted into the jaw bone.
  • Horizontal impacted wisdom tooth removal — The tooth has emerged horizontally and is pushing into the gum and adjacent teeth.
  • Non impacted wisdom teeth removal — No impaction with the bone has occurred and a relatively simple procedure is required for extraction.
Anaesthesia is required for all impacted wisdom tooth removal procedures. Our local anaesthetists are supported by registered nurses specialising in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Referred consultations for impacted wisdom tooth removal procedures are bulk billed, and your private health insurer may also cover the procedure.
