Tori Removal

As a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Toowoomba, Dr MacMillan provides tori removal and tori reduction procedures to help you overcome any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing because of tori mandibularis or torus palatinus.

Torus mandibularis is a bony growth on the mandible (lower jaw) near the rear molars and is a relatively uncommon oral condition that affects about 2.5% of the adult population. It’s primarily a bilateral condition, with about 90% of cases occurring on both the left and right sides of the inner lower jaw. It can also affect the roof of the mouth (palate) and is known as torus palatinus. A tori mandibularis removal (or tori reduction) surgical procedure may be recommended by your dentist if the growth is painful or interferes with the fitting of dentures and causes ulcers or sores.

Is tori removal right for you?

Most people affected by tori have benign cases and won’t require treatment. However,
torus mandibularis or palatinus removal may be required to:

  • Treat pain or discomfort
  • Fit upper or lower dentures
  • Fit upper or lower partial dentures (flippers)
  • Minimise food impaction under the bone growth
  • Prevent the growth of periodontal pockets.

If your dentist has recommended that you undergo a tori (or torus) mandibularis removal or reduction surgical procedure, please contact our Toowoomba oral surgery clinics to book a consultation or learn more about the procedure.
